The 2023 Oscar Nominations have just been announced and Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), a movie with an all-Latine cast and spoken entirely in Uruguayan Spanish has nabbed a nomination for Best International Feature Film. But that’s not the only Oscar nomination the film has received, as the movie was also nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve) is based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci. It tells the story of the crash of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes in 1972. Of the 45 passengers in that plane, 16 of them survived 72 days and were finally rescued after two of them – Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado climbed 15,260 feet and walked for approximately 38 miles and 10 days to seek help.

The movie has been extremely well-received by critics and fans alike. It has already entered the  Top 10 most-watched non-English language movies of all time on Netflix, and it is set to get a behind-the-scenes documentary titled Society of the Snow: Who Were We on the Mountain? or La Sociedad de la Nieve: ¿Quiénes Fuimos en la Montaña?.

In the Best International Feature Film Category, the movie will be competing against Io Capitano, from Italy, Perfect Days from Japan, The Teachers Lounge from Germany, and The Zone of Interest from the United Kingdom. In the Makeup and Hairstyling Category, it will be competing against Golda, Maestro, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things.

The 2024 Academy Awards will take place on March 10th at 7 PM ET. They will air on ABC.

Society of the Snow is now available on Netflix.
