Neil deGrasse Tyson has accomplished many things over the course of his career, including (according to his own website) “popularizing science”, and (according to our website) being the only astrophysicist anyone has ever heard of.
But, because being an expert in outer space phenomena wasn’t enough, the man also had to show us how good at internet he is. In recent weeks, you may have noticed that Tyson was the subject of all of the blawgs, due to his hilarious fact-checking tweet spree regarding Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón’s latest film Gravity. I, like most of the internet-following population, read about this, snickered briefly, and then promptly forgot about it. Until today, when I had the following realization: Neil deGrasse Tyson is the “¡Ay si, Ay si!” guy.
If you don’t follow Latin American memes (or as it’s pronounced in español “meh-mehs”), here’s a little background. Roughly a year ago, a rage comic of a man that a friend recently described as “a flamboyantly overweight Sinbad” started appearing all over the Latinternet, usually with a sarcastic “Ay si, Ay si” caption, like so:
Turns out, the man in these comics is NdeGrasseT, caught in a moment of ecstasy over how Isaac Newton is his spirit animal:

MIND. BLOWN.
So now the truth is out. While most of the gringo blogosphere assumed that NdGT’s Gravity twitter outburst was simply a scientist schooling us on Universe mysteries (or throwing shade at Cuarón for not hiring him as a consultant on the film), we can now safely assume that he was in fact trolling one of Mexico’s top film directors in retaliation for having been the butt of a primarily Mexican meme.
There is literally no other explanation. As NeildGTy has shown us, you cannot argue with science.
