Alex Yanes – Thinkspace Gallery
You might not know Alex Yanes’ name but you might recognize him work. Just judging by the roster of his collaborations: Google, Disney, Vans, etc. That list makes sense when you see his work — it’s somehow edgy, childlike, funny and thought-provoking all at the same time. The artist of Cuban descent also throws in some words in Español for good measure. An acrylic, spray paint and wood piece called “Always & Forever” shows the word ‘siempre’ next to a cigarette-puffing man, a cutesy girl and a cartoonish face that looks like a scared emoticon. Head to Thinkspace on Saturday, August 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. to check out more of this artist’s work in a show called “New Works (Office).”

This Magnificent World: An Underground Tunnel Art Walk
Yancy Quiñones grew up in Cypress Park and opened Antigua Coffee House across the street from an abandoned, run-down tunnel. He used that tunnel tons of times as a kid and one while running the coffee shop, he figured — why not turn that tunnel into a gallery? Now in its fourth month, the Cypress Village Tunnel Art Walk is going strong. This month, the art show revolves around the beginning of the whole process. Giving praise to Quiñones and the beginning of it all, the show will include art, poetry reciting and music. Not to mention cupcakes and a raffle for a car. What more could you want? Head to the space Saturday, August 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. to be in on all the fun.

August Group Show – ChimMaya Gallery
Can’t get enough art? Head to ChimMaya gallery for not one, not two but three different art shows. Get ready for a serious culture fix, with artists representing everywhere from San Francisco to Uruguay. The gallery’s resident artists — among them Yolanda Gonzalez and Emilia Garcia — joined forces with visiting artists for this series of shows. The gallery recently celebrating its grand re-opening so it’s an especially cool place to check out. Expect art that pushes the envelope with bold colors, distinct styles and fascinating subject matter. Judging from past shows, it’ll be more than enough to feast your eyes. The opening reception took place last Sunday but you can head to the gallery Wednesday through Sunday to check out the show — after all, any time is a good time for discovering new art.
