Día de los Muertos is getting political this year in the nation’s capital. Grassroots Latine advocacy group Mijente is taking the Fuera Trump campaign to the White House and Trump International Hotel on November 2 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. (EST) with other immigrant rights organizations. A traditional ofrenda will be carried as demonstrators march down the capital’s streets from the Trump International Hotel, the White House, and the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol office to honor the over 225,000 Americans, including at least 36,500 Latine people, who have died from COVID-19. One in five COVID-19 deaths in America has been Latine. Latine are more than four times as likely to be hospitalized as those who are white.

Día de los Muertos is a sacred holiday across Latin American in which families and friends gather to remember and honor their loved ones who have passed away. In 2020, this cultural event is just two days before the most important U.S. presidential election of our lives. Similar shrine processions will be held in Florida, Arizona, and Georgia nearly early voting locations—all battleground states.

Safely support the DDLM demonstration by watching the commemoration ceremony on a live-stream on November 1 at 7:00 p.m. (EST) and partake in the “minute of silence” for those who died from the virus. Kristin Urquiza will speak at the event. She wrote a powerful obituary honoring her father and denounced Trump’s failure in containing the pandemic at the Democratic National Convention earlier this year. Other guests include Grammy award-winner Felipe Fournier, actress and poet Caridad De La Cruz aka “La Bruja,” award-winning composer Carolina Calache, and more.

Fuera Trump is a campaign led by Mijente, New Florida Majority, FLIC Votes in Florida, Living United for Change in Arizona, GLAHR Action Network, and SONG Power to help Latine voters register to vote and cast their ballots. Latine influencers and celebrities such as Tiffany Cabán and singer Ana Tijoux have endorsed the campaign. Latine voters have the power to determine who becomes the commander-in-chief.
