On the first day of the United Nations’ general debate, Enrique Peña Nieto went up to the lectern and kept a straight face when he said – more than six times – that Mexico was committed to human rights. “Mexico is a nation fully committed to law, human rights, and peace,” he said.
The September 28 speech came just two days after the one-year anniversary of the mass kidnapping of 43 students from an Ayotzinapa teachers college. The tragedy shook Mexico, and continues to do so. Though the government gave an official account of what happened to the missing 43, outside experts have disputed it, explaining that the evidence doesn’t support the government’s account. Families and loved ones are, therefore, still left without any concrete answers. And they aren’t the only ones. In Mexico, there is a list of 25,000+ who have been reported missing, and more families who don’t know what happened to their loved ones.
Given all this and EPN’s insistence that Mexico respects human rights without ever acknowledging Ayotzinapa, people on social media basically ripped him a new one.

One of EPN’s biggest critics was AJ+. Their video says that he bragged about human rights in Mexico while ignoring the elephant in the room. They go on to show that while EPN was giving his speech, people were outside holding signs that called him a murderer.
Really, there was only one thing to laugh at, because this is EPN we’re talking about.
