The 2022 Texas gubernatorial election is six months away and Texas Governor Greg Abbott is hoping his Trumpian style of politics will earn him a third term in the Lone Star State.

His latest stunt to keep his name in the headlines came Thursday (May 12) when the Governor released a joint statement with the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) criticizing President Biden’s administration for providing baby formula to migrant children during a nationwide shortage. You heard that right, folks.

“Children are our most vulnerable, precious Texans and deserve to be put first,” the statement said. “Yet, President Biden has turned a blind eye to parents across America who are facing the nightmare of a nationwide baby formula shortage. While mothers and fathers stare at empty grocery store shelves in a panic, the Biden Administration is happy to provide baby formula to illegal immigrants coming across our southern border.”

Abbott went on to call the Biden Administration’s decision to feed undocumented babies in the United States “reckless.” He said that American children “deserve a president who puts their needs and survival first – not one who gives critical supplies to illegal immigrants before the very people he took an oath to serve.”

Whether it’s slowing down commercial vehicles at border checkpoints and putting a strain on supply chains, bussing migrants from Texas to D.C. so the southern state wouldn’t have to “bear the burden of the Biden Administration’s failure to secure our border” or talking about denying education to undocumented children, Abbott seems to be tripling down on his controversial decisions to energize the MAGA crowd.

Yes, there is a nationwide shortage of baby formula, but nothing good can come out of the usual “us vs. them” argument that Governor Greg Abbott always uses to defend his anti-immigrant ideas and policies.

Come November, maybe voters in Texas will realize that we don’t need a Governor who sermonizes about the sanctity of the lives of newborns from one side of his mouth and suggests we don’t feed some babies on the other.
