How do you get 62 million Latines in the United States to put aside any differences they might have and agree on a single issue? Tell them a rumor that Kim Kardashian (The Kardashians) wants to wear the same iconic dress Selena wore to the 36th annual Grammy Awards.
We’re not sure where the rumor started online, but it’s safe to say Latines and other Selena fans weren’t amused by the idea of Kardashian sporting the white Lillie Rubin halter gown Selena showed off on stage that evening when she won for Best Mexican-American Album for Live! The dress is currently on display at the Selena Museum in Corpus Christi.
There was a clear consensus online that Kardashian getting anywhere near that dress would be a serious problem for people. Many used colorful language to express their thoughts on the idea.
“No cuz why am I hearing that Kim Kardashian wants to wear this dress for something?” one user tweeted with a photo of Selena in the dress at the Grammys. “Hell fuckin no. Stay away from Selena WTF.”
Some brought up allegations that Kardashian damaged the original dress film legend Marilyn Monroe wore when she famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Kardashian, who denies the accusations, borrowed the dress from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and wore it to the Met Gala in May.
“If Kim Kardashian thought the Yt people was pissed about that Marilyn dress just wait till the Latin community find out she trying to wear Selena’s Grammy dress!!” one Twitter user wrote.
A few recorded themselves on video railing against Kardashian borrowing the outfit.
“What’s gonna bring us together is Kimberly Kardashian thinking she gonna wear Selena’s dress,” one user said on social media. “Over our collective dead bodies.”
In 2017, Kardashian caused quite a stir when she dressed like Selena for Halloween. Many Latines weren’t very happy about that either.
