When Resort 2016 collections were revealed, it became a big year for Cuba. The duo behind Proenza Schouler visited the Caribbean country for inspiration, and Stella McCartney hosted a Fidel Castro and Che Guevara-filled presentation that was more than a little WTF. But next year, Cuba will get another boost after Karl Lagerfield‘s visit to the island for Chanel’s Resort 2017 Collection. On May 3, Lagerfeld and the it-models of the moment will present the best in yacht wear for 2017, making it the first time that Karl shows off a collection in a Latin American country.

According to a statement from the Agencia de Información Nacional, important fashion peeps (Anna Wintour) will be heading to Cuba in the spring for one of the “most awaited fashion event in the last 50 years.” Chanel chose Cuba because of the “cultural richness and the opening of Cuba to the world make the country a great source of inspiration for Karl Lagerfeld and for Chanel.”

Lagerfeld is definitely a trendsetter, but if you’ve been following, there’s been a lot of celebrity activity in Cuba in recent months. So Karl is a bit late on this one.

Since the United States and Cuba first announced they would be establishing relations in December 2014, there has been a bit of change going on in Cuba. Read more about it here.
