Actresses Eva Longoria (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) and Dania Ramirez (Sweet Tooth) will executive produce Sisters of the Underground, an 8-part scripted podcast series about the Mirabal sisters.

The podcast tells the true story of sisters Minerva, Maria Teresa, Patria, and Dedé — with three of the sisters being activists working against Rafael Trujillo, the dictator of the Dominican Republic who ruled the country from 1930 until his assassination in 1961. The three sisters who were activists — Minerva, Maria Teresa, and Patria — were assassinated in 1960 by Trujillo’s men.

“I’m so excited for listeners to hear the incredible story of the Mirabal sisters in this captivating and immersive format,” Longoria said in a statement. “They are true heroes, and their story is an important example of the strong need for all of our community’s stories to be heard, seen, and celebrated. We are proud to have assembled an incredibly talented team of Dominican actors and writers to help tell this story in the most authentic and fresh way possible and to continue giving Latinx stories a platform to shine.”

Along with executive producing the podcast, Ramirez will narrate the series as Minou Tavárez Mirabal, the daughter of Minerva and niece of Maria Teresa and Patria. After the death of her mother and aunts, Minou was raised by her aunt Dedé. The rest of the Dominican voice cast portraying the sisters includes Judy Reyes (Scrubs) as Minerva; Celines Toribio (The Last O.G.) as Dede; Sharlene Taulé (Deputy) as Maria Teresa; and Akari Endo (Mission Star) as Patria.

“So proud to be part of retelling the legendary story through this lens,” Reyes wrote on social media.

Sisters of the Underground debuts on August 31, 2022, on the iHeartRadio app or wherever you listen to your podcasts.
