Remezcla is heading to Austin next week to turn up with our favorite NYC weekly, House Party. For the past year, House Party has carved out a lane as the spot to catch rising hip hop talent, packing Webster Hall with a couple thousand New Yorkers on a weekly basis who turn out to hear residents Just Blaze, 1992 with Vashtie, and Electric Punanny, as well as live performances by everyone from Rae Sremmurd to OT Genasis to Joey Bada$$.
House Party has been a godsend in an NYC nightlife landscape that in recent years has felt increasingly hostile to rap. As the city steadily continues its Bloomberg-initiated transformation into a playground for the 1%, and its club scene continues to thrive on bottle service and corny ass EDM, it’s been a relief to find a space where you can consistently hit your dougie with all your friends and get weird. Or as House Party helmer and booker Alex Damashek recently told the Village Voice, “People say New York City has fallen off, or that it’s a town for rich people, you know? But we’ve finally got our thing. This is New York.”
None of us were around for NYC’s Tunnel heyday, but we like to think House Party is the 2015 version of that iconic time – a no frills spot where you can see breaking hip hop artists before everyone gets their hands on them, party shoulder to shoulder with a mixed crowd, hear classic Noreaga AND Drake’s latest, and not be too cool to actually dance.
On Thursday, March 19th, we’re teaming up with House Party to bring that vibe to Austin, hosting performances from Just Blaze, Ty Dolla $ign, Mexican Institute of Sound & Toy Selectah, OG Maco, Teen Flirt, G-Eazy, MLKMN, and many more. Expect everything from trap territory to oldhead throwbacks, dembow to footwork, reggae to Jersey club. This will probably be the only party where you’ll be able to hear “Know Yourself”, a scrembia flip of Kanye, some tribal, AND scream along to “U Guessed It” with OG Maco.
