A Change.Org Petition Is Looking to Make the Selena Barbie Doll a Reality

This year, we’ll finally be getting the long-awaited Selena for M.A.C. collection, but if Selena fans rise together, it might also be the year they persuade Mattel to make a Selena doll. This week, a Change.org petition was created to ask Mattel to create a doll in the likeness of la reina.

With Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, and Beyoncé dolls, Mattel has already shown it is committed to bring more diverse dolls to the masses. But, Remy Ocampo, who started the petition and calls herself a Barbie collector, says “There has yet to be any curvy Hispanic barbie dolls in any Barbie line and we think Selena is a perfect candidate for that kind of representation. Selena was truly a person to be admired and I think young girls and boys would appreciate having a Selena doll in their collection.”

Since 1997, there have been a few Selena dolls sold. First, it was Arm Enterprise’s limited edition dolls, which are hard to find. Then, in 2006 DTM released two new Selena dolls. “Because this was an amateur toy company, there were quality issues and they also lacked a likeness to Selena herself,” Remy said.

And that’s just unacceptable. (Side note, if J. Lo has her own Barbie doll, then Selena totally deserves one, too.) You can sign the petition here.
