Walter Mercado may have been physically born in Puerto Rico, but we can all agree that the 84-year-old TV oracle is a universal force of astral light with no beginning and no end. And perhaps nothing captures his cosmic glamour quite like Doritos’ new ad campaign, which puts Mercado in a gold lamé spacesuit, sends him to the heavens, and explodes him into a burst of celestial energy.
Quoting everything from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Simpsons, we’re guessing the agency behind the commercial took a company-wide peyote retreat before dreaming this one up; and frankly, the result is glorious.
Of course, it’s not clear what the connection is between Doritos, time travel, cosmic energy, fertilization, and chimpanzees – but none of that actually matters. So tonight, when you lay your weary head upon your pillow, look up to the heavens and remember that Walter Mercado is smiling down on you.
