Los Punks

PHOTOS: South Central and East LA Punks Invaded NYC for ‘Los Punks’ Doc Premiere

Angela Boatwright’s documentary Los Punks: We Are All We Have dives deep into East LA and South Central’s mosh pits to give us an intimate look at the overwhelmingly Latino punk scene. After its world premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, we talked to some of the punk kids depicted in the film and they confirmed that Boatwright had absolutely nailed what it’s like to be a part of LA’s backyard DIY scene. “I think for once we were actually represented correctly. I mean, I was laughing the whole time, because I felt like I was just hanging out with my friends while I was watching it,” the lead singer of Las Cochinas (Kat Arranategui) told us.

When Boatwright and her punk entourage brought their gritty doc to New York for a screening during Rooftops Films we naturally had to join them. With performances at House of Vans after the movie from legendary act The Casualties and LA’s backyard favorites Age of Fear and South Central Riot Squad plus free beer all night, it was really a no-brainer.
