Becky G is getting into the mambo groove in her new music video for “Arranca.” The Mexican-American superstar teamed up with Dominican star Omega for her feel-good anthem. In an interview with Remezcla, Becky G talks about the new collaboration, her upcoming performance at Coachella, and her soon-to-come-out regional Mexican music album.

“Arranca” is Becky G’s first taste of new music this year, where she teamed up with her longtime producer Alexander “A.C.” Castillo. The Dominican musician was the first to encourage Becky G to sing in Spanish, so she feels as if their new song is a “full circle” moment. “I’m really thankful for him,” she shares. “[A.C.] said, ‘I feel like this song is so amazing, but what I feel would take it to the next level is if got one of our icons to get on the song and give it the blessing.’”

Becky G joined forces with the King of Mambo Omega for “Arranca.” They shot the music video for the banger in Boca Chica in the Dominican Republic. Though Becky G mentions that it can be easy for artists to appropriate other people’s sounds, she felt like “la invitada” to the Caribbean country’s culture. In addition to using an all-women production team, she enlisted extras from the D.R. to feature in the tropical video.

“It could have been so different to take ‘Hollywood’ to the D.R. But instead, I just brought myself to the D.R. and enjoyed everything that they had to offer,” she says. “I really lent my platform. It was so beautiful. I was so humbled by the experience. [Omega] was so sweet. He was very kind.”

“Arranca” could be one of the songs that Becky G performs at Coachella next month. After appearing as a special guest during Karol G’s performance last year, she will be headlining her own set on the main stage this year. “I’m so excited!” she says. “It’s so crazy. It’s like one of those really big milestones. As an artist, it’s one of the biggest stages you can walk onto. I’m just so honored. It’s such a privilege to have that time on the stage. To be able to kind of reintroduce myself to the world and let people know who I am today and how that journey has been.”

Throughout her career, Becky G has believed in the philosophy of “No soy de aquí, ni de allá.” In her hits, she has proudly represented being “200 percent” by embracing both her Mexican and U.S. roots. Becky G reveals that her performance will be dedicated to people who have grown up bicultural like her.

As an artist, [Coachella is] one of the biggest stages you can walk onto. I’m just so honored. It’s such a privilege to have that time on the stage. To be able to kind of reintroduce myself to the world and let people know who I am today and how that journey has been.”

“Why do I have to choose one or the other when I’m 100 percent proud to be born and raised in Inglewood and also 100 percent proud to be mexicana? So I’m just going to show that off,” she says. “I’m the cross streets of two flags, two different languages, and two different countries, and that’s something that I’m really proud of. [It will be] a celebration of being 200 percent.”

After being spotted singing Ana Gabriel and Ramón Ayala songs, Becky G announced that she is working on her first album of all regional Mexican music. Following the passing of her grandpa on her father’s side, she considered that moment a “huge catalyst” to pursue the project. She is working with Mexican producer Edgar Barrera, who is behind Grupo Frontera and Fuerza Regida’s smash hit “Bebé Dame.”

“The songs are also a 200 percent representation,” she notes. “There’s half of it that’s more inspired by a traditional regional Mexican sound, and then we have another half of it that’s very much new school. It’s so emotional.”

Becky G is working with Mexican-American musicians who are revitalizing the genre for a new generation of fans. She was recently in the studio with “Está Dañada” singer Ivan Cornejo. Though it’s mostly an album about heartache, there will be music inspired by her engagement to her fiancé Sebastian Lletget as well.

“It’s so funny because a lot of the songs that I’ve written and recorded for the regional album, they’re actually a lot of songs about heartbreak, so Sebas is like, ‘Babe, these are great and all, but you think we could maybe put a song—,‘ and I’m like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m working on it,’” she says with a laugh.

“The album has a lot of tear-jerking music, and romantic music, too, because that’s just where I am in my life. I’m healing at the same time as enjoying this newfound love with Sebas. It’s so beautiful.”
