Do you need some shots of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón in action to get your day started? Look no further. While details of the plot of his upcoming Mexico-set film, Roma, have been scarce, the Gravity director has shared a behind the scenes video with Indiewire to tide us over. And while we don’t learn much we didn’t know before – the film follows a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early 1970s – the footage does show us the detail-oriented approach that characterizes Cuarón. We see him chatting with background actors ahead of crowd scenes, trying to figure out how to make the best of an unwanted situation – “Mira, tenemos ventajas y desventajas,” he says to his crew at one point. “Ventajas? Pocas.” – and discussing a shot with his Director of Photography, Galo Olivares.
We’ll have to wait until 2018 to see the finished product which is Cuarón’s first Mexican production since Y tu mamá también. But in between the ’70s short shorts, the gorgeous shots at a beach, and the many protest scenes which no doubt echo el Halconazo from 1971, Roma looks like a perfect homecoming movie after a slew of award-winning Hollywood flicks.
