Stories come full circle. Lessons somehow have to be learned over and over again. And that seems to be the journey of Andor, which will explore the backstory of Rogue One fan-favorite Cassian Andor, long before he was one of the heroes who sacrificed himself for the Rebellion. Vanity Fair’s Star Wars cover story had the first details about the series, which will premiere in late summer 2022.

Tony Gilroy, who had a hand in punching up the Rogue One script for reshoots and who is now in charge of Andor, explained the basis of the story with a question: “This guy gave his life for the galaxy, right? I mean, he consciously, soberly, without vanity or recognition, sacrificed himself. Who does that?”

In a way, the movie itself touches upon this, but it does so very superficially as it focuses mostly on the character of Jyn Erso. This time, however, it’s Cassian Andor’s turn to shine, and to give us a wholly different Rebellion-type story than we’ve seen before.

For Luna, the journey of Andor is very much a refugee story, which is set to explore the people who were forced to flee the Empire. “It’s the journey of a migrant,” he shared with Vanity Fair. “That feeling of having to move is behind this story, very profoundly and very strong. That shapes you as a person. It defines you in many ways, and what you are willing to do.”

And though we’ve already seen Cassian Andor’s journey to hope, now we will get to see how he came to be part of the Rebellion, and the foundation that will inform what he’s willing to do to stop the Empire, as seen in Rogue One. That’s a story we haven’t seen before in the Star Wars universe, and one we’re very excited to see play out.

Andor is set to premiere this summer on Disney+.
