Aubrey Plaza (Emily the Criminal) has been cast in Academy Award-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s (The Godfather) upcoming feature Megalopolis. It’s the director’s first movie in 11 years.

According to Deadline, Plaza will join the ensemble, which already includes British-Dominican actress Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), and Oscar nominees Adam Driver (Marriage Story) and Laurence Fishburne (What’s Love Got to Do with It).

Plaza posted the news on Twitter with a single, random emoji – a happy face wearing a cowboy hat, although we’re not quite sure why since the film isn’t a Western. That’s Plaza for you.

Last year, Megalopolis was described as a “contemporary drama” and “epic story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love” where “the fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems.” Reports indicate that Coppola will finance the film himself for just under $100 million.

Plaza is a hot commodity these days. She just released two new films, Emily the Criminal and Spin Me Round. In Emily the Criminal, Plaza plays a young woman who gets caught up in a life of crime while trying to pay off her student debt. In the rom-com thriller Spin Me Round, she plays the mysterious assistant to a wealthy restaurateur who is running an institute for aspiring chefs. Plaza will next be seen in Season 2 of the HBO series The White Lotus.

Plaza’s Megalopolis co-star Nathalie Emmanuel has her own movie premiering in August of 2022. In The Invitation, she stars as Evie, a young woman who is invited to a wedding of a long-lost cousin in the English countryside, where it seems like a castle full of ancient beings are running the festivities and setting her up for something unexpected.

The Invitation premieres in theaters on August 26, 2022.
