Since we officially learned more than a year ago that Benicio del Toro would join the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we’ve learned very little about his character. Though Benicio suffers from loose lips – he sorta revealed that he’d be in the movie before Disney made the announcement – he hasn’t actually shed light on his character. Last week, Vanity Fair released a lengthy feature about the upcoming Star Wars flick and gave us a look into del Toro’s character. Dressed in dark colors and heavy clothing, Benicio looks rugged – though this description could apply to almost anyone in the Star Wars universe.

Unfortunately, VF didn’t bring us any closer to understanding Benicio’s character. All we definitively know is that writer-director Rian Johnson created the character. According to the magazine, del Toro plays a “shady character” with “unclear allegiances” who “goes unnamed in the film.” Apparently, the filmmakers call his character DJ. “You’ll see – there’s a reason why we call him DJ,” Johnson told VF.

While some speculate that DJ stands for Dark Jedi, Disney and LucasFilm must have anticipated this fan theory. So we’d be wary that the two companies would let such a revealing detail slip this early. But, as of now, it seems people believe del Toro will play a villain. Last year, when asked about it, he coyly answered, “You know, I’m not supposed to say, but that’s what’s out there, so I’m not gonna try and fight it.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit theaters on December 15, 2017.
