It’s been two weeks since Nuyorican Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for Congress. Her historic and inspirational win is still reverberating across the country, with people desperate to learn more about this fierce supporter of Medicare for all and tuition-free colleges. Now, people will be able to learn more about Ocasio-Cortez in a new documentary.
The newly minted Democratic candidate is the subject of a new documentary entitled Knock Down the House, directed by filmmakers Rachel Lears and Robin Blotnick. Originally started as a Kickstarter project, Knock Down the House follows four different women running for public office throughout the United States, one of whom is Ocasio-Cortez. As described on their Kickstarter, the documentary hopes to showcase how these women who “have experience in politics” were able to use their “life-changing experience[s] of injustice” in order to be part of a “rising movement” and “do something extraordinary.” On top of the documentary Lears and Blotnick released individual shorts about their subjects. Ocasio-Cortez’s primary win is nothing short of amazing, but with the news cycle running as rapidly as it does there are many who still don’t know about Ocasio-Cortez and the uphill battle she still has left to fight in the midterm election. A documentary like this can do a lot towards galvanizing women from unique backgrounds to get involved in politics. With the recent release of the Ruth Bader-Ginsburg documentary, RBG, and it’s steady box office, this a great time to tell a story about another powerful woman who is fighting to help change the world.
