Actress Eiza González is stepping into the shoes of legendary Mexican actress Maria Félix. González took to social media to share her excitement on landing the role and signing on as a producer for the film. “This is one of the most exciting moments of my life. I’ve always wanted to tell a story that features women, namely Latina women,” Gonzalez wrote before continuing, “Maria was a pioneer of the feminist movement who helped lay the foundation for future female trailblazers. Maria is an inspiration to me and many others.”
Maria Félix was one of the most influential and successful Mexican actresses of her time; her career spanning over three decades stopped just short of 50 acting credits to her name. Félix was known for iconic roles in 1946’s Enamorada, 1948’s Rio Escondido, and 1950’s Doña Diabla, all award-winning roles.
Félix was also equally known for the roles that she wouldn’t take, including those offered to her by Hollywood. She would refuse parts that held stereotypes for Latinas. Known as the Queen of Mexican Cinema, she would star in films from all over Mexico and Europe; including Spain, Italy, Argentina, and France.
Maria Félix passed away in her sleep on her 88th birthday in 2002.
Her story has yet to be told, and this project has the blessing of the late actress’ estate.
Walter Rivera, the executive producer on behalf of Felix’s estate, released a statement. “We have long been searching for the right partner to tell Maria’s story, and we are proud to be partnering with Eiza González as she embodies so much of Maria’s strength, intelligence, passion, character, and beauty,” said Rivera. “We know Eiza and this film have the power to influence change, much like Maria Félix did, and we know in Eiza’s hands, Maria Félix’s legacy will be portrayed in the most authentic light.”
González got her first big break in Baby Driver alongside Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm. She has starred in the Netflix hit I Care A Lot and in Godzilla vs. Kong. She has been ranked as one of the top five highest-grossing actors in Hollywood – she is the sole woman in the top five. She was named the first Latina in North America to be an Ambassador for Bulgari. As for this biopic, there is no word yet on when production will start on the project, let alone when it will hit screens.
