During an interview with Becky G on the latest episode of her Facebook Watch series Face to Face with Becky G, Mexican actor Diego Boneta discussed the importance of Latine representation in Hollywood and how his upcoming movie, the remake of Father of the Bride, is helping fill that need in the industry.

“To me, right now, that’s the most important part of my career,” Boneta said. “I realized that those stories that we’re talking about, representation, just wasn’t happening.”

Earlier this year, announcements about the remake’s casting started rolling in with Oscar-nominated actor Andy Garcia (The Godfather Part III) first getting tapped to play the titular father of the bride. Then, other cast members soon started coming on board like Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Gloria Estefan (Music of the Heart), Adria Arjona (True Detective) and Boneta.

The remake centers on a Cuban American family getting ready for their daughter’s wedding. Boneta was cast as the groom.

“The premise is a Cuban-American marrying a Mexican family,” Boneta said. “I love that because the obvious choice would have been Cuban-American marries an American family. And it’s the first movie I can think of for general market audiences where it talks about the difference and similarities within the Latin world.”

Boneta is coming off the third and final season of Luis Miguel: The Series for Netflix where he played the title role. During an interview with Remezcla earlier this year, he said it was a “privilege” to play the Mexican singer.
