We have good news for all you Robert Rodriguez fans. A television series based on his cult movie hit, From Dusk Till Dawn premieres this week on El Rey network. A joint venture between Univision and Rodriguez, the English-language channel launched last year. El Rey caters to young Latinos and its content, curated by the Rodriguez himself, includes: feature films, grindhouse genre, cult classic action, and horror/sci-fi programming.
From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is El Rey’s first original scripted show and centers on the Gecko brothers, the same crime duo from the film. They are on the run from the FBI and Texas Rangers after a bank robbery goes wrong and several people are left dead. After crossing the border into Mexico they end up in a strip club overrun by vampires. (Unfortunately, Salma Hayek does not reprise her role as the Queen Vampire.) The supernatural crime drama expands the storyline of the original cult flick, adds new characters and backstories and explores the connection between Mesoamerican mythology and vampires.

We’re not exactly sure what vampires have to do Mesoamerican culture but we’ll likely find out a little bit at a time. The first clue comes in the opening scene of the pilot episode when an indigenous women is thrown into a pit full of snakes. As the serpents begin to slither over her and curl around her arms and leg, a large one slides into her mouth and she swallows it. Weird.
The series stars D.J. Cotrona as bank robber Seth Gecko and Zane Holtz as his slightly psychotic brother. Don Johnson (Django Unchained and Crockett from the original Miami Vice) and Jesse Garcia play the Texas Rangers who are determined to track them down. Added bonus: Wilmer Valderrama plays a ridiculous drug dealer who wears a lot of leather.
From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series premieres Tuesday March 11 at 9:00pm on El Rey Network.
