DC Comics fans were beyond delighted this weekend when photos leaked online of Colombian American actress Sasha Calle as Supergirl from the superhero film The Flash, set to release in 2022.
In February, Calle was officially cast as the first Latina Supergirl in DC Comics history. She received the news during a video call with Argentine director Andy Muschietti (It Chapter Two), who is directing the movie.
Before the photos leaked of Calle on the set of The Flash this weekend, Muschietti and Calle had cryptically teased the Supergirl suit on their Instagram pages.
With all the excitement behind the 12th film in the DC Extended Universe, images from the production were bound to find their way online and get fans buzzing. Best-selling comic book writer Tom Taylor was also participating in the conversations, commenting on the similarities he saw between his 2014 version of Supergirl and the photos of Calle.
It comes as no surprise that these photos brought up many questions and theories about what version of Supergirl Calle was depicting. Before the leak, some people assumed she was playing the original 1959 Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, a cousin of Superman.
The Flash will also star Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as the title character, a forensic scientist-turned-speedy-superhero, becoming a Justice League member. In the upcoming film, he travels back in time to try and prevent his mother’s murder. Along with Calle and Miller, the film stars Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as two different reiterations of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Fans will have to wait to see which version of Supergirl will be portrayed by Calle, but either way, the Colombian actress is already building anticipation around her the DC Universe character.
