Disney+ will put a Latina in the driver’s seat. The upcoming 10-episode TV series based on the National Treasure franchise will feature a Latina DREAMer as lead, who has a lot on her shoulders.

The spinoff TV series will be seen through the eyes of the 20-year-old DREAMer, Jess Morales. She and her friends will venture to solve mysteries, recover lost family treasure, and unearth secrets that have been buried for generations.

Disney+ is leaning into the mysterious storyline and not releasing much information about the upcoming series. As of the time of publishing this article, there is no word on who might take on that leading Latina role. There aren’t details on when production might start or when we might see it hit the streaming service. Disney+ is taking on a prevalent storyline by making Jess Morales a DREAMer. But where that will take the story or how heavy politically it will be remains to be seen. Being that it’s Disney, you can safely speculate that it will not be making any political statements.

National Treasure featured Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Gates, a treasure hunter and cryptologist. The first film made over $347 million worldwide when it was released in 2004. A second film, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, brought in over $459 million when it hit theaters three years later. A third film was announced in 2008, but has been slow to make it to production. Much of the returning cast, including Cage, Justin Bartha, and Diane Kruger, are expected to return.
