Lux Pascal has come out as a trans woman via a cover story at the Chilean El Mercurio’s magazine, YA.

The actress was formerly known as Lucas Balmaceda and has appeared in Chilean dramas Los 80 y La Jauría. According to the interview, she started transitioning about a year ago and is thanking trans activists for highlighting trans issues, but shies away from becoming a voice for the trans rights movement because she feels that she has been lucky to have been in a position of privilege during her transition.

“I have had a certain form of privilege because I have been able to make my transition hidden and with support,” said the Juilliard School student. “LGBTQ+ equality movement has been led by the most marginalized of voices, those who at the end of the day, had nothing to lose because they had already been deprived everything. I have been very fortunate.”

Instead, she hopes to use her platform and influence to highlight trans voices, not just because she identifies as trans but because she feels it’s her duty as a privileged trans woman. “I feel that many will say that I am appropriating the discourse of unprivileged trans women, trans sex workers or trans people who do not have the money or the help to buy their hormones or transition as they want. But I have a connection with them. I call them sisters because I feel them like that,” she said.

When asked about how her family has reacted to her transition, Pascal notes that they have been nothing but supportive. “I had already been talking about it with my entire family, little by little, like coming out of the closet as non-binary for about three years,” she stated. “But now it was much more, I can finally say that I am a woman.”

And that includes big brother, Pedro who, according to Lux, was only concerned with how she felt.

Lux said The Mandalorian star “has been an important part of this. He’s also an artist and has served as a guide for me. He was one of the first people to gift me the tools that started shaping my identity.”
