The advertising campaign for FX’s new series, Mayans M.C. is heating up. After the announcement that the 10-episode spin-off to The Sons of Anarchy would be premiering over Labor Day weekend, it was assumed actual footage of the series would follow. This after the first teaser trailer dropped two months ago, offering little more than footage of men riding motorcycles. Now, a full trailer has debuted giving audiences their first glimpse of new prospect EZ Reyes (JD Pardo) and his attempts to become a member of the Mayans motorcycle club.

The trailer sets up the major players of the narrative, particularly Pardo’s Reyes who has recently been released from Stockton State Prison. As the new prospect, his job is presumably to wash and gas the actual members bikes. Other members, including Emilio Rivera‘s Marcus Alvarez (the bridge between this series and Sons of Anarchy) mention they like the new guy, but as Edward James Olmos‘ Felipe Reyes mentions to his son, “You’re in this now…no getting out.” It’s unclear how things will go down but based on the rapid cutting that shows guns, desert landscapes, and EZ burying a body, things turn grim quickly. The show’s makeshift theme song, a Spanish-language version of The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” gives things a darker edge that blends well with the frightening, twisted world Reyes will be wrapped up in.

Mayans M.C. is being overseen by Cuban-American showrunner Norberto Barba with Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter directing an episode. The trailer certainly looks like a mix of what made the Sons of Anarchy so appealing while promoting this as a completely different world. Pardo and Olmos look perfectly suited to the roles and it’s actually surprising how the trailer focuses on him, and not the motorcycle gang. Fans of the original FX series should be delighted by this but I’m more intrigued to hear whether audiences who have never seen Sons of Anarchy will be drawn in.
