After 26 years and five scary movies, the Scream franchise will continue next year with a sixth installment and has invited actresses Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega back to play another sinister game.

Earlier this year, Barrera and Ortega starred in the franchise’s fifth installment, curiously titled Scream, as Sam and Tara Carpenter, two sisters who find themselves in a world of pain when the Ghostface killer returns to Woodsboro to slash his blade at unsuspecting teenagers.

“The gang’s at it again,” Barrera wrote on Instagram. “6cream summer camp, here we go!”

Although the script is currently in the works, according to Deadline, the next sequel will see Sam and Tara leave their small, fictional California town to start new lives. We will go out on a limb here and say that Ghostface will return to the next sequel in some form. It’s no surprise another Scream movie is coming. The entire franchise has made over $744 million at the box office worldwide.

While Barrera’s Sam is one of the strongest survivors in the last Scream, she told Remezcla in January that if put in the same situation as her character in real life, there would be no sequel in her future because she wouldn’t last past the first act.

“I’m definitely the brave idiot that thinks that they’re…if we need to go out into the woods to look for something, I’m the one that’s like, ‘I’ll go!’ and then dies,” Barrera said. “That’s definitely me.”

Ortega also chimed in with Remezcla during promotion for Scream to talk about what kind of music she’d like on the soundtrack of a horror movie if she were ever to play the villain on screen. “I’ve always wondered what would be playing in the background if I ever portrayed a serial killer…in a slasher film,” she said. “I honestly hope I’m able to play that role one day with Queen Latifah blasting.”

The sixth installment of the Scream franchise is scheduled to debut in theaters on March 31, 2023.
