With the recent renewal of On My Block and One Day at a Time, as well as features like 12 Segundos and the Brazilian drama 3%, Netflix is becoming the premiere place for diverse series and movies aimed at Latin American and Latino audiences. One of the breakout series for the streaming service is the crime thriller Money Heist (La casa de papel) which Netflix announced will exclusively air its third part next year.
Money Heist, created by Spanish showrunner Álex Pina, originally premiered on Spain’s Antena 3 as a limited series event split into two parts. The series follows a group of eight people, all with a specific set of skills, as they interact with a mysterious figure known as The Professor (played by Álvaro Morte). The Professor forces them to enter the Royal Mint of Spain, staying there for several days in the hopes of printing 2.4 billion dollars in Euros. Trapped in the mint for the next 11 days, the group deals with sixty-seven hostages and the police, all of whom hope to complicate the plan.
Though the original series was a two-part limited event, Netflix announced the third part will be something new entirely, with the Professor developing an entirely new heist; it’s unknown if any of the characters or plot points from the initial two-part installment will carry over to this third one. The first part of the series debuted on Netflix in December and the service has just released the trailer for the second half which was made available last month.
Money Heist has become a worldwide phenomenon, proven by Netflix’s statement that the show was the most watched series not in English in the streaming service’s history. The show has a devout following and a whole new story opens up the Professor’s plans to a more global network.
Money Heist: Part 3 is set to premiere in 2019.
