Change is afoot for Netflix’s Las chicas del cable (Cable Girls). For its fourth season, the Spanish period drama from the creators of Gran Hotel (the OG one, not the new ABC one) and Velvet, is moving straight into the 1930s, fast-forwarding a year following the explosion that closed off its season three ender. This means that our most stylish cable girls (played by Blanca Suárez, Maggie Civantos, Ana Fernández, Nadia de Santiago, and Ana Polvorosa) are going to be facing a wholly different country. The monarchy is dust and the Republic is now the new norm.

As has been the case for three seasons now, the lives of our hat-loving protagonists will serve as backdrop for a feminist look at a pivotal moment in Spain’s history.  On the streets, the struggle for equality, rights, and freedoms for women will be raging forward, in ways that will undoubtedly intersect with the melodramatic antics of the titular girls. And for a show that’s already tackled illicit and steamy lesbian affairs, murder cover-ups, and romantic triangles involving twins, it’s clear there’ll be plenty of personal drama to spare. There is, as fans know, that pesky explosion that closed off season three. Though from the promo clip Netflix released, it doesn’t look like the girls are quite ready to cop to what really happened.

The fourth season of Cable Girls premieres August 9, 2019, on Netflix.
