As if fans didn’t already feel hyped about finally getting a Miles Morales movie, Sony has now blessed us with Gwen Stacy, another fan favorite version of the comic world’s top webslinger.
In the latest trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miles takes lessons from a more experienced (and lightly washed) Peter Parker as we get a peek into the Afro-Latino teen’s life in Brooklyn – where he bounces from school to doing superhero work in the shadows. As the trailer goes from dark and moody scenes to colorful, neon-hued ones, we move through the ups and downs of Miles’ life. But he’s not the only cooler-than-Peter-Parker Spider-Person in the animated film. This preview also serves as an introduction to Spider-Gwen, a version of Gwen Stacy from an alternate universe imbued with great powers after a radioactive spider bites her.
A Latino artist co-created Spider-Gwen, who has become extremely popular since making her debut in 2014’s Edge of Spider-Verse #2. Artist Robbi Rodriguez, writer Jason Latour, and colorist Rico Renzi collaborated on the creation of this fresh take on Stacy. At New York City Comic Con in 2016, Rodriguez told Remezcla that the idea came about when Marvel asked Latour to pitch ideas. The three had wanted to work on a comic together for years, so they took advantage of the opportunity to join forces on the project. Rodriguez came up with the design of the costume – an iconic look that helped contribute to Spider-Gwen’s instant fandom.
Initially, Rodriguez felt caught off guard by the fact that many people cosplayed as Gwen based off just that first comic. He didn’t exactly have high expectations for the character. “I think all of us thought this would be like a one-issue thing and it was going to be in the dollar bin in six months,” he said, jokingly.
Rodriguez, whose Twitter timeline provides a glimpse into Spider-Gwen’s popularity, with the artist frequently posting pictures of fans cosplaying as the character, expressed his feelings of pride when the trailer dropped. And his reaction couldn’t be more endearing.

It was also recently announced that Nuyorican actress Luna Lauren Velez joined the voice cast as Miles’ mother Rio.
