Rapper and actor Nicky Jam is seeing his star power rising. The “Yo No Soy Tu Marido” singer’s upcoming action-comedy Regulators, which he’ll star in, has been acquired by Universal Pictures.

According to Deadline, the deal with Jam, who also serves as a co-producer on the film alongside Oscar-winning actor Will Smith (King Richard) and others, was made after multiple studio bids were submitted.

Story details are unknown, but the script for Regulators will be written by Brooks McLaren and D.J. Cotrona and is based on an original idea. A script the duo wrote for a movie called Fight or Flight landed on the Black List, a list of the best-unproduced screenplays, in 2020. That project follows a mercenary who goes after a passenger on a plane but is forced to protect her when they are both targeted.

Regulators won’t be Jam’s first rodeo. He appeared with Smith in the 2020 action sequel Bad Boys for Life. He also had a role in the 2017 action sequel xXx: Return of Xander Cage and lent his voice to a cartoon bulldog in last year’s live-action/animated version of Tom & Jerry. Jam also has his own TV series, El Ganador, which dramatized his own rise to fame in the music industry.

This past summer, Nicky Jam teamed up with Prince Royce and Jay Wheeler to release Royce’s bachata single “Si Te Preguntan…” Later this month, he will receive the Hall of Fame award at the 2022 Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony. Past inductees include Marco Antonio Solis, Jose Jose, Daddy Yankee, Ivy Queen, and Vicente Fernandez.
