It’s a homecoming of sorts for Justina Machado and Gloria Calderón Kellett – and for fans of both. The two women, who respectively starred and acted as showrunner of the Netflix turned Pop TV comedy One Day at A Time will be working together once again, on a very different project. Machado is set to star, and Calderón Kellett will Executive Produce The Horror of Dolores Roach.

The half-hour series, which has just been greenlit by Amazon Studios to stream on Amazon Prime, is based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name and will be co-produced by Gimlet and GloNation Studies. Aaron Mark, responsible for writing and directing the podcast, and Dara Resnik will serve as co-showrunners and EPs.

“We at Amazon Studios fell in love with this story along with everyone else as the podcast captured listeners. We couldn’t be more excited and fortunate to be working with such world-class creatives to bring Dolores Roach to screen in what is sure to be a captivating series,” said Marc Resteghini, head of development at Amazon Studios.

The show is described as “a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale of eat or be eaten; a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.” Certainly a departure from their One Day At A Time days, but an interesting challenge fans will surely keep an eye on.

Machado recently voiced Zee in The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, while Calderón Kellett’s With Love was released on Amazon Prime.
