Is Oscar Isaac joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? According to Deadline, the Guatemalan American actor is in negotiations to star as the comic-book superhero Moon Knight for an upcoming series on Disney+.
If casual Marvel fans are not familiar with the character, Moon Knight has a very complex storyline. We’re not sure how close the series will follow the original comic-book narrative, but Moon Knight, who is known in human form as Marc Spector, is a former Marine and mercenary with Dissociative identity disorder. The multiple personalities Spector creates include millionaire entrepreneur Steven Grant and taxi driver Jake Lockley.
Spector’s origin story begins with a trip to Egypt where he is left for dead after finding a statue of the Egyptian lunar god Konshu, who appears to him in a vision and offers to save him if he becomes his avatar on Earth. He first appeared in the comic book Werewolf by Night #32 in 1975 and has since led a very busy life as one of the lesser-known members of the Avengers.
Working in the film industry since the late 90s, Isaac’s breakout role came with his incredible performance as the title character in Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2013 drama Inside Llewyn Davis. Isaac continued displaying his immense talent in the 2014 drama A Most Violent Year and the 2015 sci-fi thriller Ex Machina.
Mainstream moviegoers know him best for his role as Poe Dameron in the last three episodes of the Star Wars franchise. His first foray into the superhero world came in 2016 when he played the title villain in X-Men: Apocalypse. Isaac will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi remake of Dune in late 2021. He was recently cast to play Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola in the film Francis and the Godfather.
Along with the series featuring Moon Knight, Disney is gearing up for the new shows they will add to the MCU over the next few years, including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. On the slate for this December is the debut of WandaVision featuring the characters of Scarlet Witch and Vision.
