Few forces in this world have the ability to transform functional adults on the job into deranged mega fans like Star Wars does. This fandom is not here to play, even if they are journalists and bloggers, they will battle for the best seat at the event, and then happily help each other get the best selfie with the movie’s logo perfectly placed behind them.
That’s exactly what happened during the recent Star Wars: The Last Jedi press conference in Los Angeles, where outlets from across the country and the globe gathered to hear from the cast and director of the latest chapter in the franchise. We were all there to talk about a movie sight unseen, as only the cast had had the chance to watch the film in full beforehand. Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Drive, as well as newcomers to the Star Wars universe like Kelly Marie Tran, Laure Dern, and Domhnall Gleeson were in attendance to answer questions in secretive fashion.
Although Benicio del Toro was the most notable absence, Guatemalan-Cuban-American heartthrob Oscar Isaac was on hand to represent Latinos and to set a holiday sweater craze in motion on Twitter. The colorful piece of clothing is definitely festive and fans, inside the conference and beyond, want to know where to get it. If you look closely, the orange and white stripes on the arms resemble his uniform in the movie as Poe Dameron. Of course this is just a guess.
Some comments point to Isaac’s heritage as inspiration for the garment, which we assume is referring to Guatemalan textile patterns. Unfortunately, nobody asked him these important questions during the event, so we can only hope that somewhere out there someone did during later interviews. For now, it seems like Oscar Isaac’s sweater has saved Christmas, and you know the second someone figures out where it came from, that brand is going to blow up.
Fans (and when I say fans I mean the press) continued to swoon over Isaac thanks to his sincere statement about the women in his life. After the actresses in the cast answered a question about the importance of seeing strong women, like Princess Leia, on screen, the actor politely asked to add a comment, “As a guy, I’d like to say that for me the most formative people in my life have been women and that has shaped my destiny so much, and to see that reflected in the film is really beautiful, and it is more true to real life and what’s always happened, which is they are the ones leading the way.” Cheers ensued.
To quench your thirst for more Oscar Isaac, Remezcla fixed The Last Jedi trailer to only include Poe’s lines. Of course, this evidences that Disney is still not mining the Latino potential of their franchises because there is not enough Oscar Isaac in the original trailer. A spin-off dedicated to his character could make them millions. If they sold Isaac’s sweater, the masses would flock to the Disney store with bills in hand. But if his tía in Guatemala made it for him, then you leave that alone Disney!
