It has been 25 years since J.Lo played Selena Quintanilla-Perez in the singer’s biopic. The movie chronicled the Tejano singer’s life and career and had an indelible mark on the lives of Latine people. And next month Selena fans, and their children, will get a chance to bond over the biopic once more.
The film, which shows the tragic death of Selena at the hands of Yolanda Saldívar as Selena’s star was skyrocketing, is coming back to theaters starting on April 7 to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary. The Quintanilla family shared the news on Facebook teasing fans who are waiting to learn the dates and locations of the release.
Selena’s career was groundbreaking and pushed Latine music to the mainstream as she started to cross over to English-language music. The biopic strengthened her legacy for decades to come and fans are eager to support her memory.
Fans are very excited to see the movie in theaters once again.
In recent years, the Grammy-winning singer earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a wax statue from Madame Tussauds, and MAC Cosmetics launched a limited line of Selena-inspired makeup.
Last year, Selena was officially inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Rep. Joaquin Castro, who was the chairperson for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at the time, wrote a letter to the NFR urging “careful consideration” of the film due to its historic and cultural relevance to the Latine community.
