No sooner had we talked about how Netflix was getting in on the music biopic series bandwagon then it turned out they had plenty more in stock. She may already have gotten a classic feature film biopic (starring JLo no less!) but Selena Quintanilla’s life is coming to the small screen soon. The streaming giant announced today that we can expect Selena: The Series very soon. The move is not surprising considering the “Amor Prohibido” star continues to inspire fans (including Cardi B) more than twenty years after her death. She was, after all, one of the most successful Mexican-American artists ever and bridged the gap between her Mexican heritage and her Texan upbringing. In a teaser video scored by the chanting of adoring fans as the words of one of Selena’s greatest hits (“Bidi Bidi Bom Bom”) flash across the screen, you can see the title credits for the show — the singer’s iconic signature in bright purple hues.

Few other details are known about the project. But the fact that the Quintanilla family are developing it and serving as executive producers on the show tells us two things. One, we’re getting plenty of music since rights issues will likely not be a problem. And two, we’re likely to get as rosy and uplifting an image of the crossover artist as we did in the Gregory Nava-directed film from 1997. The Quintanillas are famously protective of Selena’s image so don’t expect the scripted series to be any more lurid than that classic biopic, especially when it comes to the circumstances surrounding the singer’s tragic death. THR reports that Moisés Zamora is writing the script and will serve as an Executive Producer together with the Quintanilla family and Jaime Dávila of Campanario Entertainment among others. What we desperately want to know, of course, is who is about to step into Selena’s disco and Tejano music-loving shoes. We know what playing the Grammy winner did for Jennifer Lopez, so you know that it’s a dream role for many Latinas out there.
