Netflix isn’t the only streaming service hoping to further entertainment offerings for Latino audiences. In the wake of Netflix’s recent greenlighting of several Spanish-language shows, Amazon Prime announced they’ll be creating an original series about Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona.
The bio-series will explore Maradona’s life as the “Golden Boy” of soccer, from his early career to the four FIFA World Cups he played in during the late ’70s, to his 1986 victory at the Mexico World Cup. Two years ago Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia, the director of the Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy, planned to make a film about Maradona. It’s said Kapadia’s film is still on, but plans for it to be the concluding chapter of a trilogy involving “child geniuses and fame.” There’s no word on when it will be released.
Amazon Prime’s Maradona series is part of a commitment to tell more Spanish-language stories, particularly through Mexican studios. The streaming service recently debuted Diablo Guardian, a Mexican action drama, and are planning to release an unknown series entitled Un Extraño Enemigo.
Between Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Pantaya, there’s no reason more people can’t find Spanish-speaking cinema and TV series, and the streaming services continued interest in fostering content just opens up different stories to new audiences. It’ll be interesting to see how much attention this bio-series captures when it’s finally released to the public, likely long after the 2018 World Cup is done with.
