TRAILER: Iñárritu Has Leonardo DiCaprio Fight a Bear in ‘The Revenant’

Lead Photo: The Revenant

A much hairier version of Leonardo DiCaprio is back in the Alejandro González Iñárritu-written and directed The Revenant. The movie, based on the 2003 Michael Punke novel, features Leo – frontiersman Hugh Glass – looking like an extra from the Night’s Watch on Game of Thrones. After he is mauled by a bear and left for dead, Glass struggles to survive in the brutal terrain, and get revenge on the hunter that betrayed him. In addition to some intense, breathy panting from Leo, the trailer stands out for its stark cinematography, once again care of frequent Iñárritu collaborator Emmanuel Lubezki, who shot the film using only natural light.

This is Leo’s first movie since 2013’s Wolf of Wall Street. And because anytime he makes a movie, there’s accompanying Oscar talk, maybe this will be the one that sticks. Or maybe, Leo will just have to be content watching Iñárritu own the Oscars again.

The Revenant will be released January 7, 2016.
