One of two separate biographical TV series on Vicente Fernández will debut soon, and the producer of the show is saying their version has the better actor portraying the late Mexican singer.

Producer Juan Osorio, who is behind El Último Rey: El Hijo Del Pueblo, told the TV program Ventaneando that their actor, Pablo Montero, will do the “best” job playing “El Charro de Huentitán” in comparison to actor Jaime Camil on the series The Idol of the People, which will premiere in the United States on Netflix. El Último Rey is based on the controversial book of the same name by Argentine writer Olga Wornat.

“I think that each one has their trajectory, their followers, but the best is Pablo,” Osorio said.

El Último Rey is an unauthorized series, while The Idol of the People is supported by the Fernández family. In the past, the Fernández family has stated that they are not interested in seeing a project that is based on a book that links their family to alleged drug trafficking and other shady dealings.

“I hope that the [Fernández family] realizes that we also have great respect and affection, but that there are things that cannot be hidden,” Osorio told El Universal. “The situations that the family has experienced are in the public domain.”

Late last year, Camil expressed how excited he was to get the opportunity to play someone so beloved by the Latine community in The Idol of the People.

“Portraying Vicente Fernández, without a doubt, is one of the biggest and most important challenges of my career,” he wrote on Instagram in September. “In my opinion, Chente is Mexico’s biggest idol and the most monumental exponent of Mexican music all over the world.”

El Último Rey will debut on March 14 at 8:30 p.m. on Televisa and Univisión. A premiere date for The Idol of the People has not been set yet by Netflix.
