Apart from hosting the Golden Globes pre-show weeks ago and co-hosting the Latin GRAMMYs, it’s been a long time since we have seen Oscar-nominated Yalitza Aparicio on any sized screen. Yalitza Aparicio burst onto the scene three years ago with her role in the movie Roma. The film became a critical darling after it’s release in 2018 and went on to receive 10 Oscar nominations, that included one for Yalitza who became the first Mexican actress to get the nod in 14 years. The film would win three Academy Awards including Best Foreign Language Film that year. Since then, Aparicio has spent most of the time advocating for film community efforts in Mexico.

Fans of the one-time school teacher will be ecstatic to hear Aparicio, also known as Aparicio Martínez, has finally signed onto her second movie role. Aparicio will be starring in Presences. The project is being described as a horror film in which a man visits a secluded cabin, after his wife dies, to soon encounter when strange things. Presences also stars Damián Alcázar (Hell and Narcos). Production has begun safely in Mexico and is expected to last for a month. There is no date yet set for release.

In addition to promoting cinema in Mexico, Aparicio has used her celebrity status to further Latinos. When the actress co-hosted the Latin GRAMMYs she did so in gowns made by Latino designers. “For this occasion, I am very happy because we will get to showcase a lot of Latine designers, which I think is very important. We have to take advantage of this moment and showcase the talent these Latinx designers have,” she shared at the time.
