America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) has a lot going on in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And from what we’ve seen from the multiple trailers, clips, and teasers released by Marvel, she’s smack dab in the middle of a fight that she doesn’t know how to win. Good thing she’s not alone in this and that she has superhero Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) at her side. Let’s not forget Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong.)
In an exclusive clip for the Marvel event that will change what we know about the multiverse as we know it, Chavez, Strange, and Wong sit down to…have a slice of pizza. Or at least Chavez does. Strange and Wong are too busy trying to get her to tell them what’s going on after what we assume is the encounter with the squid monster marketed as Gargantos on the streets of NYC. Clearly, Chavez is unphased and wants to carb up after a dangerous encounter.
It’s when Chavez casually talks to Strange in Spanish that things get interesting. He…doesn’t understand her and she’s surprised. There’s a back and forth between her and Strange before Chavez turns to Wong and asks about him not knowing Spanish, signaling to the audience that she’s met a version of him that knows Spanish. Wong’s response is fun with an edge that only comes from poking at someone that you’ve known for a while and are friends with.
Strange is obviously not amused but Chavez, and the audience is.
