The first trailer for Father of the Bride dropped Monday (May 9), and it looks like the perfect combination of Latine comedy and drama. The film stars Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, Isabela Merced, Adria Arjona, and Diego Boneta.

Father of the Bride is the second remake of the original 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. A remake starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton premiered in theaters in 1991.

In the new story, a Cuban family learns that their eldest daughter Sophie (Arjona) has proposed to her boyfriend Adan (Boneta), and he has accepted. In the first full trailer for the movie, Garcia’s patriarch character Billy is surprised at the progressive way the engagement has happened. “You proposed to him?” Billy asked. “He didn’t propose to you? You can do that? Does anyone do that?”

Billy has more to worry about than the manner in which his daughter has become engaged in Father of the Bride. He and his wife Ingrid (Estefan) are having marital problems. This has led them to attend marriage counseling, but Ingrid is not sure their relationship can be salvaged anymore.

“His marriage to his wife is on the rocks,” Garcia told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s sliding downhill and is on a slippery slope, not because they don’t love each other. We’ve kind of grown into different spaces, and we take our marriage for granted at this point.”

Until Sophie’s wedding happens, Billy and Ingrid decide the best thing to do would be to “play the perfect family” and keep their marriage problems a secret. Now, all Billy has to do is meet the groom and his family, decide on a wedding budget with the wedding planner (Chloe Fineman), walk his daughter down the aisle and tackle any other problems that happen before the big day.

Father of the Bride is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max June 16, 2022.
