Things are about to get dark and dementedly fun with Tim Burton’s upcoming Netflix series Wednesday. The teaser trailer debuted, fittingly, on Wednesday (August 17), and features actress Jenna Ortega (The Fallout) in the mischievous title role of Wednesday Addams, the strangely discontented daughter of the equally odd Addams Family.
The second and much longer teaser trailer begins at a new school where Wednesday is not very happy that some of the jocks have been bullying her little brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez). So, she lets them know in her own special way.
“The only person who gets to torture my brother is me,” a stone-faced Wednesday tells a group of high school water polo players at practice – right before she drops two bags filled with piranhas into their Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The blood in the water is proof that Burton’s take on the gothic character is going to be at least a bit creepier than what audiences have seen before in the original TV show from the 1960s, the 1990s movies starring Christina Ricci, or the recent animated films from Illumination.
The trailer continues with French singer Edith Piaf’s famous song “Non, Je ne regrette rien” playing in the background as Wednesday and her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and father Gomez (Luis Guzmán) are seen traveling to her new school, Nevermore Academy, which takes on a Hogwarts-type feel.
There, Wednesday tries her best to make friends, although her people skills might need a little work. “Wanna take a stab at being social?” one of her fellow students asks her. Her response: “I do like stabbing.”
Viewers then get a glimpse of Wednesday showing off her fencing and cello skills, squishing a huge spider with her bare hand and hitting the dance floor dressed like she’s going to a funeral. Death has always been something Wednesday has been obsessed with, so there will be plenty of time for murder and mayhem when the new series debuts later this year.
