Actress and musician Selena Gomez is shining a light on her own mental health issues in the documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me. The first trailer for the film dropped on Monday (October 10), World Mental Health Day.

“Every breath, a breakthrough,” Gomez tweeted. “In honor of #WorldMentalHealthDay, I wanted to share the trailer for my documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.”

Directed by Alek Keshishian (Madonna: Truth or Dare), the documentary follows Gomez for six years as she works to pull herself out of her personal darkness after she reaches stardom in the entertainment industry.

“Just be who you are, Selena,” Gomez says at the start of the trailer. “No one cares about what you’re doing. It’s about who I am. Being OK with where I am. I am grateful to be alive.”

Some of the health challenges the film covers include Gomez’s battle with anxiety and depression and her diagnosis of bipolar disorder in 2020. The documentary also details her struggle with lupus, an autoimmune disease that forced her to undergo a kidney transplant in 2017.

“How do I learn to breathe my own breath again?” Gomez asks herself.

In the trailer, Gomez tells viewers that what makes her most happy is connecting with others. She said it helps her “get out of my head.” Part of that connection means helping people in need in any way she can. But it also means connecting with herself.

“I am happier and in control of my emotions and thoughts more than I have ever been,” Gomez said. “I know this is the beginning for me.”

Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me premieres on AppleTV+ on November 4, 2022.
