Contrary to a report from The Independent, the record-breaking series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega will not leave its home at Netflix if it gets an order for a second season.
The outlet recently questioned whether Wednesday could be forced to move to Amazon Prime based on an article from Deadline last year, which confirmed that Amazon and MGM merged after closing an $8.5 billion deal. MGM currently owns the rights to The Addams Family content.
On Tuesday (January 3), IndieWire rebuffed that theory when it reported that “a person with knowledge of the situation” told the outlet that the deal between Netflix and MGM for Wednesday was “locked in long before Amazon purchased MGM.”
Although a second season has not officially been announced by Netflix, IndieWire wanted to “assure fans that the idea [that Wednesday was leaving Netflix] is about as far-fetched as a severed hand that walks itself around.”
According to Deadline, “a [Wednesday] renewal is thought to be inevitable.” The outlet reports that producers of the series are starting to build their writers’ room and brainstorming locations. Deadline adds that “insiders expect renewal talks to go pretty smoothly.”
In last year’s Deadline report about the merger, it was reported that Amazon was “not planning to make all MGM content exclusive to Prime Video.”
In all honesty, it wouldn’t really matter where Wednesday ended up streaming. If we had to stand on our rooftop in a lightning storm holding an antenna to get reception, we’d do it to watch Season 2. Remezcla called the debut season “magical” and “outstanding.”
