Could Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu Be the Second Mexicano in a Row to Win the Best Director Oscar?

Spring is around the corner and it can’t come quickly enough — kinda like the end of awards season. Don’t get us wrong, we’ve had a great time celebrating Latin@ and Latin American actors and auteurs: after all, 2015 was a historic year for Latinos on the small screen. But though we did score Oscar nominations in most of the major categories, there was no hiding our disappointment over how we remain underrepresented in the film industry.

Pride is something we don’t lack, though, so we’re gearing up to cheer on critical darling Birdman as it faces off against Boyhood later this week. The two films have been neck and neck throughout award season, though Birdman did earn the most Oscar noms. This weekend promises an end to the competition (we hope): the Independent Spirit Awards will air on Saturday, February 21 and Birdman and its incredible team, including Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu and Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, are nominated for Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Then, on Sunday, February 22, it’s the granddaddy of award shows: the 87^th Academy Awards. Iñárritu, Lubezki, and crew will face off against Linklater’s squad in the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography categories (talk about déjà vu).

Again, this is one of the closest races we’ve seen in years; Linklater got the Golden Globe for Best Director, but Iñárritu just nabbed the Directors Guild Award. And Lubezki, whose singular “one-shot” presentation stunned audiences and critics alike, just won top honors at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards. You’ll have to tune in this weekend to know for sure, but as we gaze at the list of accolades Birdman has already won, we’re feeling pretty confident about toasting to Iñárritu and el Chivo.
