For someone as ubiquitous as Frida Kahlo, it feels as if we’ve learned everything there is to know about the Mexican painter. But every now and then, we encounter new information about her. Just two years ago, for example, an exhibit featuring Ishiuchi Miyako’s photographs gave us a look into Frida’s wardrobe – clothes and beauty products that Diego Rivera locked away after her death – for the first time in 50 years. And now, rare photos taken of the artist in her youth have surfaced online.

Though any Frida fan is likely familiar with the image of her sitting on a rooftop with NYC skyscrapers serving as the backdrop, these rare 1920s photos of Frida predate her time as an artist. From her First Communion to a photo captioned “19 years old, when I married Diego,” here are 11 pictures you may not have seen of Frida before:
