Awards season is here, and this morning, the nominations for the 20th annual Latin Grammys were announced, with Spanish artists Alejandro Sanz and Rosalía not-surprisingly leading with the most nominations (8 and 5 respectively) – making the worldwide Latino gang proud. In recent months, the focus on non-Latino artist’s place within the thriving Latin music industry has sparked debate about who can and should call themselves Latino/a/x, with some teetering on the brink of gaslighting by telling everyone “we all need to calm down.” It will certainly be interesting to see how these nominations add to the ongoing conversation.
Other notable nominees included Sech, Vicente García (who is going toe to toe with fellow Dominican Juan Luis Guerra in more than one category), with Tainy being surprisingly left out of a best producer nomination, and Ozuna coming in with just a single nod.
