A Journey Through Miguel’s Sleek Sarape-Inspired Looks

Although Governors Ball was ultimately canceled on Sunday, the festival still showcased some fresh looks before the NYC thunderstorms came down. A standout style icon from the fest was R&B singer Miguel, who took the stage in a sarape at his Gov Ball set, dancing and jamming in the traditional Mexican shawl.

Wildheart, Miguel’s third album, is a powerful journey to self-knowledge, so this sartorial nod to his Mexican heritage comes as no surprise. In the song “what’s normal anyway,” Miguel sings, “Too proper for the black kids/too black for the Mexicans,” a standout moment from the album where he reflects on navigating multiple spaces and identities on the path to self-realization.
