I’ve been reading a lot about how Latinos swept the Golden Globes. Let’s not get carried away here. Yes, it was a sweet night for Gael García Bernal, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Oscar Isaac but we are far from sweeping anything. (Unless, you know, you ask Hollywood casting directors.) Case in point: when America Ferrera and Eva Longoria were presenting, MTV Australia tweeted, then deleted, this:
I hope this person got fired because he doesn’t understand English and that’s the language of their land. Also, keep in mind that exactly zero Latinas took home awards.
The Golden Globe winners are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA), a body of 90 international journalists or, as the host of the night, Ricky Gervais, likes to call them: nice, old confused journalists who give stars statues so they can take selfies with them. Ya burnt, Hollywood Foreign Press, ya burnt.
The members of the HPFA weren’t the only ones burnt tonight. Gervais roasted everyone from Trump to Morgan Freeman to the infallible Tina and Amy. It was pretty great. Here are our highlights of the night.

Oscar Isaac has been on our radar for a long time, but post-Star Wars he has become the entire internet’s crush. After he took home a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Mini-Series, twitter was ablaze with lust for the Guatemalan-Cuban actor.
America Ferrera and Eva Longoria Throw Shade With a Smile
Before the pair of actresses came on stage to present an award, Gervais introduced the ladies of NBC comedy: “Eva Longoria and America Ferrera aren’t just beautiful, talented actresses. Iñárritu won two statuettes (for Best Director and Best Motion Picture – Drama) and chose to ignore Trump and recognize indigenous people, while managing to make fun of himself and his peers.

Iñárritu went on to say, “Pain is temporary but a film is forever, so who cares.” And that’s why you win two years in a row with two films who could not be more different from each other.
